Japanese Sci-Fi References

Fun post time!
NARASAKI is a huge sci-fi fan.
Here are some references he used:

NARASAKI got his alias, Goro Watari, from the main character of Inazuman (1973).

SADESPER RECORD got it's name from Sadespar.

U-DESPER RECORDS (NARASAKI's record label) got it's name from Udespar.

The characters on THE VISITORS FROM DEEPSPACE album art are loosely based off of Alien Zetton from Ultraman or Kemur Man from Ultra Q.

Hedorian Forever is a reference to Queen Hedrian from Denshi Sentai Denziman (1980).

NARASAKI: "DEEPERS 作っとるよ" / "I am making DEEPERS"

FELLOW BROALTARS!!!!!
COALTAR OF THE DEEPERS' last album, Yukari Telepath, was released in 2007. Their last single, DEAR FUTURE, was released in 2011. Their last concert was in 2017...
NOW...

COTD IS COMING.

RELEASE THE RABBIT!!!!!

Saturday, April 29, 2017

4/14/2017 COALTAR OF THE DEEPERS @ (東京キネマ倶楽部) Kinema Club (Tokyo, Japan)

COALTAR OF THE DEEPERS' last album, Yukari Telepath, was released in 2007. Their last single, DEAR FUTURE, was released in 2011. Their last concert was in 2015. I was ridiculously happy when I found out that they were doing another concert in April 2017. So I got to see COALTAR OF THE DEEPERS for the first time, during my honeymoon with my husband! Special thanks to one of my COTD FAN internet friends for helping me get the tickets through ePlus!

our tickets
My husband and I got to hang out with some COTD FANs (from the forums and Facebook) the day before the concert. It was amazing to meet fans from Oregon, Canada, and Finland! I can't believe how quickly we became friends through COTD.

The day of the concert, my husband, friends, and I got to the venue a little early. While waiting, I got to see Akira (guitarist) walk by and some fans gave him gifts. A couple of COTD staff were selling new COTD shirts and I got to meet Kurata (manager), Kanno (drummer), and Koji (guitarist)! Not gonna lie, I was such a fan girl... I was surprised that Koji could speak English well! He also gave me a COTD shirt! Though there was mostly a language barrier when speaking with the others, thanks to Google Translate, we were able to talk about COTD FAN and how we came from all over the world just to see them! We got to take a photo with Koji and Kanno too! Special thanks to my husband for going back and forth to our AirBnb and to the venue to grab the gift I brought for COALTAR OF THE DEEPERS and NARASAKI! (We were in a hurry!) I made custom stickers and patches and got tequila as a belated birthday present for NARASAKI. I was able to give the gifts to one of the COTD staff members at the goods table.

The new COTD shirt is a parody of the record label, WARP.

Koji (g), HAETAE, Kanno (d)

GOATBED was the opener and they were pretty fun! I only heard about GOATBED from their My Bloody Valentine - Loomer cover on the Yellow Loveless compilation. They reminded me of the visual  kei/JRock I used to listen to when I was in middle school, so it felt a bit nostalgic. Shuji Ishii of GOATBED is also from cali≠gari (Kenjiro (bassist) is also from cali≠gari). GOATBED said that they invited COALTAR OF THE DEEPERS to do the concert with them. At the end of their performance, GOATBED shared an awesome cover of MY SPEEDY SARAH. Unfortunately, I cannot find a link to it anywhere at the moment. Maybe it will be up on iTunes some day.

COALTAR OF THE DEEPERS' setlist:
1. How Smooth
2. Zoei
3. Wipeout
4. Dear Future
5. Swimmers
6. Dl++
7. Receive
8. Submerge
9. C/O/T/D
10. Aquarian Age
Encore
11. Dead by Dawn
12. Hyper Velocity
13. Silver World
Encore #2:
14. Killing An Arab (The Cure cover)

How Smooth
When COTD walked onto the stage, it was like they returned to an old friend. They were such rock stars and everything seemed natural to them. When they opened with How Smooth, I was in awe and images from the "music video" in the FOREVER DVD kept flashing in my mind. I thought it was a great chill opening song to get the audience in the same vibe before we party like crazy.

Zoei
I pretty much headbanged through the hard parts and watched the fans wave their arms while NARASAKI sang.
(tezensu: waving both hands in the air in time to the music)
Throughout the concert, when the timing was right, I joined in with the arm waving and it was really fun haha.

Wipeout
Oh man... everyone went crazy during this song. I remember we were all jumping and I could feel the floor move.

Dear Future
It was a little more chill during this song. I also really wanted to sing along with the chorus, but mouthed the lyrics instead. Japanese fans don't really sing along so they can hear the band perform better.

Swimmers
Beautifully surreal. The blue stage lights waving onto the band really felt like they were submerged in water. I closed my eyes during this song a few times.

Dl++
THIS WAS A FUN TREAT. I didn't think they'd perform this song, BUT THEY DID!
NARASAKI's singing was very cute.

Receive
This was a fun shoegaze-y moment. I found myself mesmerized with the distortions and the transition to the end was beautiful.

Submerge
MORE JUMPING AND HEADBANGING!
I swear, everyone yelled, "ここに来るわ!!/koko ni kuru wa!!/It's coming over here?" in unison (Misato's quote from Evangelion) and it looked like NARASAKI expected it haha.

C/O/T/D
I lost my shit when this came on. It's such a classic. Koji was great with the guitar solo!

Aquarian Age
HOLD THE PHONE! THIS SONG IS FUCKING AMAZING LIVE.
IT SOUNDS BETTER THAN THE STUDIO VERSION. I DON'T KNOW HOW TO EXPLAIN THIS.
I didn't think I'd headbang and jump so much to this song.

Encore
The band talked to the audience a bit. A fan mentioned RABBIT EP and NARASAKI replied with something like, "Yeah! I know I know it will be out ....!" :(
When there was a lull, I couldn't help myself so I yelled out, "NACKIE, DEATH GROOOOOWL!!!!!"
He replied, "Nani?/What?"
Apparently, Japanese people call death growls, death voice... so he probably didn't understand what I was saying. oops.
...BUT THEN THEIR NEXT SONG WAS...

Dead by Dawn
THIS SONG IS ALSO AMAZING LIVE. NARASAKI'S DEATH VOCALS ARE SO MUCH MORE DIVERSE LIVE. He hit higher notes than usual and it sounded much better in my opinion.
There was lots of screaming. huhuhu...

Hyper Velocity
I also lost my shit when this song came on. I always dreamed to count along with the song... haha.
1! 2! 1! 2! 3! GO!
More jumping and headbanging.
It was beautiful.

Silver World
This was also a treat! I also didn't expect them to play this song! Again, NARASAKI was very cute.
It was going to be a sweet happy ending until...

Encore #2:
Killing An Arab (The Cure cover)
Morota played those famous trumpet notes from Killing An Arab. He looked sneaky while playing the notes as the band members walked off the stage. He repeatedly played the notes until KANNO came out waving his arms and making an X with his arms for "No!". In the end, KANNO gave up and the other band members slowly came out and NARASAKI looked like he was wondering what was going on.
The show ended with more jumping and headbanging.
It was as if we were all friends who had an amazing party together.
While everyone was saying goodbye, KANNO approached the audience and gave everyone high fives! His departure was quite dramatic as the spotlight shined on him. He bowed goodbye and disappeared behind the fancy curtains.

Even the end of the concert was really fun. As concert staff was putting the cables and instruments away, they would throw out the setlists to the fans. I tried to jump for them, but didn't catch them. One of the staff found KANNO's drumstick stuck in the curtain and threw that into the crowd too! I thought it was really nice of the lucky fans to let other fans take photos of the setlists!

When we got outside the venue, I got to meet some Instagram and Twitter COTD FANs that I have been following for a while! It was fun chatting with them about COTD.

Before we left, Kurata quickly approached me and gave me a folded piece of paper. I unfolded it and saw that it was a copy of the setlist! I thanked him a billion times and lost my shit.

This whole experience was so surreal. COALTAR OF THE DEEPERS is my favorite band in the world and I'm so happy that I got to see them.

COALTAR OF THE DEEPERS and BP. ...and RABBIT EP?!

HAPPY NEW YEAR, EVERYONE!
On December 30th, 2013, COALTAR OF THE DEEPERS and BP. had a live together at Ikebukuro CHOP (Tokyo, Japan). ICHIMAKI performed with COTD towards the end of the concert- they ended with the cover of My Bloody Valentine's "sue is fine". COTD also covered a song from the band, LUSH.
During the MC of COTD's gig, a fan asked NARASAKI about RABBIT EP and he replied that it'll be released in 12 months (2014) depending on his manager. The concert seemed like a great ending for 2013 and now we're even more eager on waiting for RABBIT EP.

While we wait... please check out the COTD FAN Forum for rare downloads, more updates, and interact with fans! :)

I'll eventually get to updating the DOWNLOADS page on COTD FAN... I apologize for taking so long on that...

NARASAKI June 2012 Interview

Special thanks to foxiii for interviewing NARASAKI!
This special interview was for foxiii's undergraduate thesis on the underground Japanese indies scene. Keep in mind, questions were asked to help with his thesis.

(copy & pasted from facebook)

The interview was in Japanese. The questions were pretty standard good-old-band stuffs though. This is a quick and more contextual translation, not literal. If you found any significant mistake that made huge difference in meaning, please tell me and i will correct it ASAP. As I'm not an expert in Japanese.

A : Azam, N : Narasaki

A :「COALTAR OF THE DEEPERS」という名前はど 371;から来ているのですか? > (Where did you get the name Coaltar of the Deepers'? Also, please tell the formation history of COTD)

There’s this song “sinking slowly” in this band, and there’s something like this in the lyrics : “Yukkuri to Coaltar no Umi ni shizundeiku” (Sinking slowly in the sea of “coaltar”). We took the name from there.

[azam’s comment: perhaps sinking slowly song has been written before they release the white EP]

That [coaltar] name came from our guitarist at that time [Not sure if this is Narasaki or other person]. Because he has no English ability, that kind of hard-to-explain 'coaltar' word became our band name.

[It's interesting how Japanese make strange words and sentences that sounds English but has no particular meaning.... like Cruyff in the Bedroom, Float down the Liffey, 4 Bonjour's Party, etc. I see some templates there. lol]

2 years prior to joining this band, Kanno the drummer was in a Thrash Metal band. At the beginning of the band, there’s actually a vocalist [watanabe] but he quit. Since then, Narasaki the guitarist became the main vocal in this band.

> (Could you please explain the songwriting process and recording in COTD? Also, from COTD’s songs, what message or stories that you are actually want to tell?)

Actually there are lots of different processes on songwriting. But, anyway,

At first, I usually imagine the song that I want to write. Mostly, I use guitar for songmaking. I begin from chord progression and guitar riffs. Based from that, I make the melody. The lyrics are written at the end. There’s no message that I want to tell [from our songs]. On the contrary, I love to write things that I don’t even know what I’m talking about. [Not sure about the last sentence translation. Please clarify]

> (COTD’s songs always carry many kinds of mood and produces amazing sound. For example in Wipeout (the shamisen sample), Dead by Dawn’s sudden change of mood (from dark to lighter), Receive Assimilation’s epic composition, and many others. Why and how did you create these unique sounds?

For example, in Wipeout, I was like, “what if I put Japanese traditional instrument sample on top of the heavy guitar sound?”, it began from that kind of Idea. I think, for Japanese people, that song is kind of strange but I like to make songs that I never heard before.

N:「DEAD BY DAWN」

As about the change of mood such as in Dead by Dawn, I thought it would be interesting to make two kinds of voice in the song. I think it’s impossible to make it by machine, but it’s possible to reproduce it on live. [not sure about the translation.]

N:「RECEIVE ASSIMILATION」

As for the epic composition in Receive Assimilation, It was using 3 guitars layered. I want to make epic-beautiful sounds of chorus feel in the song. It took a lot of time for this. Perhaps by layering subtle different chords, it will give the sense of depth and width of sounds.

The long ambient interlude in the song was to show the feeling / situation of “receiving power from outer space” [this is interesting]

> (According to many people, COTD is the first generation of Japanese Shoegazer band. What do you think about this. Also, in your opinion, what’s the meaning of “shoegaze”?)

Though COTD picked up the heyday of shoegazer boom, the fact is, we never consider COTD as a shoegaze band. We are just happen to be a band that has some songs with shoegaze style. But we don’t deny if shoegaze is a big influence to our band. Also, it’s fact that I like guitar sounds that is something like / close to shoegazer.

> (Many newgazers (recent / new shoegazer bands) said that COTD gives big influence to them. Also, many of them said that you’re a legendary band in Japan underground scene. What do you think about this?)

Because we're still active in doing music, it’kinda funny if people say our band is legendary. Though i don’t really care about 'shoegazer' or 'newgazer' categorization, I’m very happy that newgazer bands love / interested to our songs.

Could you please explain what is this song about. In addition, why do you have an interest in Anime?)

When an offer for making anime ending soundtrack song came from the record company, it was not yet decided who will perform for that. Then, after a short time, it’s decided that COTD will do it. Then we were like ‘Let’s make shoegazey songs for it’

> (Most of COTD’s CD has no lyrics printed inside them. Was this intentional ? Why?)

Because i don’t really think lyrics are important. By not knowing what the musician saying [/the lyrics], the listener can freely interpret / capture the feeling by themselves.

[I always thought why many people can just love foreign songs without even know the lyrics, and I always think Narasaki's answer the reason.]

> (What’s your opinion about recent JPOP music and Indie / Underground music (especially shoegaze)?

Because I absolutely has no interest [in JPOP / mainstream stuffs], I’m not really familiar with it. Lots of popular songs in the town are really horrible to listen to. As for Japanese shoegazer bands, I don’t know much about them.

> (What’s your favourite band / musician and what music do you recently listen to?)

Well that’s a hard question. Because I really like lots of different genres. But recently, I listened to MBV’s newest remastered releases. I also listened to Kaki King and Fionn Regan recently.

> (You worked together with Scott Cortez’s Astrobrite, could you please tell me about the collaboration process?)

N: なぜかASTROBRITEの曲をインターネットӗ 1;聴くことができて、これは好きだ ;。 と思って、詳しい友人に「このバ ンド知ってる?」と聞いたら スコットと個人的なつながりがあ って、日本でライブがしたがって& #12356;るというのを 聞いて、日本での公演のメンバー サポートを提案しました。 それならそのメンバーでついでに 録音もしようということになった& #12290;

[The answer of this question was pretty confusing to me. My friend and teacher, Maya Yonesho, who happened to be online helped me a lot in this. But if you have better interpretation, please tell me]

(I don’t really remember how) I listened to ASTROBRITE music on the internet by chance. I really like the music.

I asked a friend of mine, “Do you know this band?”. Apparently, he personally know Scott [Cortez], and asked to play live in Japan, then suggest me as support member for the performance. Well, from that, we started doing records.

Though it’s a collaboration, all of the songs were written by Scott

> (Right now, what are COTD doing? Do you plan to release new materials soon?)

This year we will do around 3 or 4 gigs. There’s no plan yet for recording and stuffs.

A: 最後、海外のファンに、何かメッ セージをお願いします > (Last question, what’s your message to many of your fans outside Japan?)

Having listeners outside Japan who love our songs makes me really happy. Thank you!

Fastest Draw

LIVE REVIEW:

Aquarian AgeでNackieが途中で「you can dance」と言う。
Fastest Draw
Death Voice

LIVE REVIEW:

NARASAKI photo

I found this Japanese blog while searching for COALTAR OF THE DEEPERS photos. The blog had a high quality image of NARASAKI (Some of you may recognize the photo from an online interview, but this image in in higher quality.)!
The blog mentions something about ordering a photo along with THE BREASTROKE II (according to Google Translate)... As far as I'm concerned, the official COALTAR OF THE DEEPERS' website never said anything about selling photos. If anyone could translate the blog entry, please do!

NARASAKI photo:

In 2001, COALTAR OF THE DEEPERS was on a TV show called, 梁山泊 (Ryo Zang Pak).
I think it's a comedy game show.
Only
the members, NARASAKI, KANNO, and ICHIMAKI, and another band (I forgot their name) were on the game show.
The videos USED TO BE on YouTube, but due to copyright laws, the videos were taken down.
I tried to find more information on this episode, but none were recorded online.

From what I remember from watching the videos, COALTAR OF THE DEEPERS and the other band were asked questions and some were personal. After all the points were added up, in the end, the other band won.

If anyone has any information on this episode and TV show, please let me know!

Yahoo! Japan Auctions [July 2007]

I'm sorry for not posting, everyone! I've been quite busy...

This is old news, but I've been meaning to post this information up.
Back in July 2007, NARASAKI was auctioning off some guitars and equipment. Unfortunately, I was stupid and did not save the photos of his equipment. :( SORRY!

There is also this Japanese website that has a photo of one of NARASAKI's auctioned off items.
http://natalie.mu/music/news/2471

From what I remember, the items were ONLY AVAILABLE for Japan.
I also remember that one black guitar that had a small sticker of a cute bunny on the head of the guitar. hahaha
I'm very jealous of the people who have those items now...
If anyone has one of NARASAKI's items, please share some photos! :)

possible origin of COALTAR OF THE DEEPERS name?

Some fans have wondered how COALTAR OF THE DEEPERS' band name originated. In the KGNU interview with NARASAKI, he stated:

"The name was given by one of the original members without too much thinking, but it implies our intention towards something deeper."

They were also previously know as COALTAR MAN (as seen on their demo tapes).

In the JROCK interview, NARASAKI stated:

"At the beginning we were called COALTAR MAN, but at the same time, there was already an organization of that name. A guitarist, who sometimes plays with us, (przeforsowal?) name that we have today."

(Please excuse the poor Polish-to-English translation Google Translate provided...)

It's nothing super special or anything, but here's an interesting thought...
Leland (aka Lostman), COTD FAN staff researcher, found an interesting website that had a collection of Japanese urban legends and one of them involved coal tar.

"Coal tar was used as insulation for electric wires in the early days. Somehow, rumors began to circulate that the thick dark insulating substance was derived from the blood of innocent young women. At the height of the rumors, many virgins were afraid to go outside, fearing they would have their blood stolen for use on the wires."

Do you think COALTAR OF THE DEEPERS' were possibly inspired by this urban legend?
Feel free to start a discussion.
